Motion Detection: Protecting Your Family

December 28, 2025

Garage doors are heavy.some weigh over 400 pounds.and they operate with significant force. Without proper safety features, a closing garage door could cause serious injury. Modern safety technology, particularly motion detection systems, has made garage doors much safer, but understanding how these systems work helps ensure they protect your family effectively.

How Photo-Eye Sensors Work

Since 1993, all garage door openers sold in the United States must include photo-eye sensors. These devices mount on either side of the door opening, about six inches from the ground. One sensor transmits an invisible infrared beam to the other. When anything breaks this beam.a person, pet, bicycle, or object.the door immediately stops and reverses direction.

Proper Sensor Installation and Alignment

For photo-eye sensors to work correctly, they must be properly aligned. Each sensor has an indicator light.typically one sensor shows green (receiving) and the other shows amber (sending). If either light blinks or is off, the sensors are misaligned or malfunctioning. Sensors can be knocked out of alignment by bumps, vibration, or even temperature changes causing brackets to shift slightly.

Keeping Sensors Clean and Functional

Dirt, cobwebs, and debris on sensor lenses can block the infrared beam, causing false triggers or preventing the safety system from working. Regularly wipe sensor lenses with a soft cloth. Also check that nothing is stored near the sensors that could interfere with the beam. Even tall grass or leaves blowing across the beam can cause the door to reverse unexpectedly.

Testing Your Safety System

Test your photo-eye sensors monthly. With the door open, place a cardboard box or similar object in the door's path. Press the close button.the door should reverse within seconds of touching the object. If it doesn't, the sensors need attention. Never disable or bypass photo-eye sensors, even if they're causing inconvenience.the risk to your family isn't worth it.

Additional Safety Features

Beyond photo-eye sensors, quality garage door openers include auto-reverse mechanisms that detect resistance. If the door encounters an obstruction that the sensors didn't catch, the force sensor detects the resistance and reverses the door. Wall-mounted control panels also include safety features like vacation lock modes and lighting controls for visibility.

When Safety Systems Need Professional Attention

If your safety sensors frequently trigger without cause, repeatedly need realignment, or show signs of physical damage, it's time to call a professional. At North Bend Garage Doors, we ensure all safety systems meet or exceed manufacturer specifications and current safety standards. Your family's safety is our priority.
